Donald “Donnie” Ballantyne passed away peacefully on April 16 at 4:20 p.m. at London University Hospital at the age of 78.

He was the beloved father of Trevor (Cathy) of Newmarket, Papa to Kenzie (Matt),and Maddie and proud Poppy to Ezra and Elowyn (Winnie).

Father of Chad (Sandra) of Barrie, Grampa to Connory (Maxence) of Montreal, Caedda of Halifax, and Keelan (Taylor) of Barrie.

Father of Kaj (Libby) of Huntsville, Papa Bear to McKinley, Elianna, and Chloe.

Father of Sarah of Barrie.

Dear brother of David Ballantyne (Sharon) of Guelph and Doug Ballantyne (Marina) of Hamilton.

Donnie, affectionately known as “Bear,” “Dad,” “Grampa Bear,” and “Papa,” lived a life marked by deep faith, service, and relationships. Raised in a pastor’s family, he carried forward a legacy of ministry that shaped much of his life. He served in the Canadian Navy before dedicating 38 years to church ministry, starting his training at New Brunswick Bible Institute (NBBI) and, over the years, becoming a trusted friend, counsellor, camp pastor and director, and church leader to many in New Brunswick and Ontario.

He will be remembered for his ability to see potential in others and invest in it. His influence reached far beyond his family, touching the lives of countless people through mentorship, encouragement, and faithful service. Known for his humour, storytelling, and occasional mischievous streak, Donnie brought both laughter and wisdom wherever he went.

He was part of a multi-generational legacy of ministry, following in the footsteps of his father, Archie “Poppy” Ballantyne, who contributed to the early days of Camp Widjiitiwin. That legacy continues through his children and grandchildren, many of whom are actively serving in ministry today.

A Celebration of Life will be held on May 24 from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church, 454 Arkell Road, Puslinch (Guelph), with remarks and shared memories beginning at 4:00 p.m.
