Derek Edward Irwin

The family of Derek Edward Irwin announces his passing on October 19, 2025, in Ottawa, Ontario, following a lengthy illness.

Born in England, Derek immigrated to Canada in 1970, where he established his home and career. He later married Marian, and together they raised two children, Kevin and Sheilagh.

Soccer played a central role in Derek’s life. He competed for many years in England and continued playing after moving to Canada, joining several Toronto-area teams. Following the family’s relocation to Peterborough in 1990, he coached girls’ soccer, contributing to the growth of the sport in the community.

In recent years, Derek enjoyed travelling with family and friends, and particularly valued time spent with his granddaughter, Sloane.

Derek is survived by his wife, Marian; his children, Kevin and Sheilagh (Corey) Lock; and his granddaughter, Sloane. He is also survived by his brother, Richard (Carol) Irwin, and sister, Sue Irwin of England; his sisters-in-law Ann Marie Prentice, Elizabeth Thompson, and Nora (Jamie) Collins; his brother-in-law Eamon (Darlene) Thompson; and several nieces and nephews in England and Canada.

A private family gathering to celebrate Derek’s life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to The Perley Health Foundation.
