Daniel Gary Gallant

March 4, 1953 — October 25, 2025

With broken hearts, the family of Daniel (Dan) Gallant, formerly of Stephenville, Newfoundland, announce his passing in Ottawa, Ontario, on October 25, 2025, at the age of 72 years.

Left to mourn are the love of his life and wife of 49 years, Sheila (Sheppard); his daughters, Danielle (Derick) and Lisa (Dion); his cherished grandchildren, Emily, Jane, Benjamin, Evangeline, Michael and Kailey; his brothers, Jim, Jack, Gerard, Wayne, Norman, Ivan, Ron, Raymond, Roddy and Ricky; and his sisters, Liz and Juanita. He was predeceased by his parents, Evelyn Young and Stephen Gallant; sister, Marion; son, Michael; and granddaughter, Brittany. Dan loved people and will be greatly missed by neighbours (and their dogs), former co-workers, fast-ball buddies, and friends and acquaintances in Newfoundland and in Ottawa, where he spent his last 19 years.

Dan brought a passion and singular focus to anything he pursued, from skiing to woodworking, weightlifting to mechanics. He was devoted to his family, and was always ready to build, paint, lay a floor, or repair a car. Dan could fix anything, and every project was filled with his love. In his later life, he embraced the role of Poppy with his whole heart, taking his grandkids on shopping trips and for lunches at McDonald’s, training a runner through the winter, sharing his love of guitar, and crafting woodworking projects for them to treasure forever. The kids of Steve MacLean Public School still talk about the fourth-grader who peeled away from school pick-up on a motorcycle. He had a big heart, a loud laugh and 12 different favourite types of cake. He also enjoyed an unlikely second career in creating sets for television and movies, getting his first IMDB credit at the age of 58. It has been devastating to lose him, but a gift to have loved him.

In keeping with Dan’s wishes, there will be no visitation or service. Cremation has taken place and his ashes will be interred at a future date in his beloved Newfoundland.

If desired, donations in his memory may be made to the Ruddy-Shenkman Hospicethe Ottawa Hospital, or the Canadian Cancer Society.

"Pooh, promise you won't forget about me, ever. Not even when I'm a hundred."

Pooh thought for a little.

"How old should I be then?"

"Ninety-nine."

Pooh nodded.

"I promise," he said.
