Obituary

Dale Young, 50, of Barrie, Ontario, passed away on October 18, 2026, at 11:28 a.m, surrounded by the love of his family after a courageous battle with anaplastic thyroid cancer.

Dale was the proud father of Kylie, Taylor, Sophie and Ayden and his son-in-law Brandon MacDonald. His children were his greatest joy in life, and he carried deep pride in each of them. His legacy lives on in his children, who embody the best parts of who he was.

He was the beloved son of Mark Young and his partner Lesley Rogers as well as his mother, Linda Zavitz and her husband Karl. Dale is survived by his grandmother, Betty Young. Predeceased by his grandparents George Young and Joyce and George Haalstra.

He is lovingly remembered by his sister Jennifer (married to Larry Hambly) and his step-siblings Jonathan and Katie Zavitz. Dale was adored by his nieces and nephews, Chase, Grace, Henry, Harlon and Hallie. He will be greatly missed by his cousin Amanda and aunt and uncle Brian and Linda McKay.

Dale spent his adolescent years in Northern Ontario, where he embraced the true north lifestyle. Snowmobiling, ice fishing, and enjoying the rugged simplicity of the outdoors. He worked in the mines in Sudbury before beginning his millwright apprenticeship, a decision that shaped the rest of his life.

A millwright by trade, Dale worked across North America and internationally, including living and working in places such as Mexico. This opened up further opportunities including maintenance manager roles and running the Canadian division for a major international press company. He was highly respected in his management roles and known for his expertise in large press makeups, troubleshooting, and diagnostics across multiple regions. His colleagues valued his skill, his calm under pressure, and his ability to solve problems few others could.

Outside of work, Dale was a simple man who loved simple pleasures. He enjoyed cooking and barbequing, always eager to try new recipes or recreate old favourites. A true foodie, he loved searching for new restaurants wherever he travelled, guided by his trusty google reviews. His treatment days quickly turned into "where can we try next?". Dale cherished time spent in his garage, tinkering, fixing, or simply enjoying a cold beer in one of his favourite spaces. He leaves behind a legendary CD collection and an Alexa speaker that never could turn the volume up high enough for the songs he loved. From Morgan Wallen to Ozzy, AC/DC and Merle Haggard.

Dale's life was defined by hard work, loyalty, and a deep love for his family. His legacy lives on in his children, his parents, his siblings, nieces and nephews and the countless memories shared by all who knew him.

Deep gratitude to the Odette Cancer Centre, Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, and his home nursing team for the exceptional care and support.

In honour of Dale, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, or to the family via the "Donate To Dale" GoFundMe created by Jennifer Hambly.

A reception in remembrance of Dale's life will be held on Saturday, November 14th, from 1:00PM to 4:00PM at the Jennett Memorial Centre, 152 Bradford Street Barrie. All who wish to gather, share memories and stories are welcome to attend.
