Obituary

Constance Virginia “Virgie” Gerrior, 86, passed away peacefully, Friday, January 16th, 2026, in the St. Vincent Palliative Care Unit of Elizabeth Bruyere Hospital in Ottawa, Ontario after battling cancer and lung disease. Born July 7,1939, Virgie resided in Stellarton for most of her life, moving to Ottawa in 2022, at the age of 83, where she began the next chapter of her life. She was the daughter of the late Bill and Elsie (Warrington) Smith of Lourdes. She is survived by her daughter Karen Gerrior in Ottawa and brother Billie (Donna) Smith in Toronto. Virgie is fondly remembered by special friends who were like grandchildren to her, Coleen Fraser and Laura McInnis. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Donald and son, Kevin whom she loved deeply, sister Joan (Eddie) MacDonald and Cheryl Smith.

Virgie and Don loved travelling to visit their children in California, Ohio and Ottawa where they enjoyed many good times together. Music was a big part of their lives, attending concerts and festivals throughout Nova Scotia, Ontario and the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville. Virgie was known for her love of card games and Bingo, which she continued to enjoy right up until the last weeks of her life. Living in Ottawa for the last three years brought her a sense of joy and adventure. Through the Kanata Seniors Club she made many new friends, went on day trips and became a sought-after bridge partner. She loved reaching out to her friends in Nova Scotia through handwritten letters, texting on her iPad and many phone calls. She became an avid Ottawa Senators fan, cheering them on when she attended her first NHL game.

Virgie volunteered at several organizations including Pictou County Help Phone, UCT, and devoted many hours to gathering alumni together for Stellarton High School Reunions. Her butterscotch pies and boiled icing angel food cakes were legendary. She loved the colour pink and sparkly jewelry, which matched her vibrant personality. Her engaging nature and candid words were part of what made her so memorable.

Her faith in God was the foundation of her life, carrying her through both joy and hardship. She trusted the Lord completely and shared that faith through her love, kindness, and steadfast spirit. Her family finds comfort in knowing she now rests in the peace she so firmly believed in.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Pictou County Food Bank.

A funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 28, 2026, at Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Stellarton, Nova Scotia, with a reception to follow at the Sr. Catherine Steele Centre.
