IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Claude Fabien
Gauthier
July 3, 1960 – February 2, 2026
With loved ones gathered close, Claude slipped peacefully from this world in Ottawa at the age of 65. He leaves behind a life rich with creativity, connection, and character—a journey as layered and singular as he was.
Claude carried a profound love for his family. He will be missed beyond measure by his daughter, Amy (Gus). He is remembered by his children Julie (Nicholas), José (Eric), Noah, Quinn; and by his grandchildren Leonidas, Kalliope, Theodoros, Nathan, and Ella.
He is honoured by his siblings Diane (Guy), Jocelyne (Yvon), Lorraine (Michel), Colette (Marcel), André (Ellen), and Nicole; as well as his sister-in-law Rosy and brother-in-law Richard. Claude also leaves behind many nieces and nephews who shared in his laughter, humour, and stories.
Claude is reunited with his brother Roger, who followed him gently into the quiet beyond, together with their parents, Léopold and Thérèse, and their sister Rolande.
A born artist, Claude found his truest solace in the workshop — a haven of tools, sawdust, and imagination where he breathed life into raw materials. His creative eye extended far beyond woodworking; he was drawn to bold, jubilant colours, especially the vibrant purples and pinks that mirrored the lively glimmer within him. He also loved the natural world — flowers, fresh air, and the northern wilderness he grew up in — a place whose raw beauty stayed with him throughout his life.
Claude’s journey, like the grain of wood he so admired, held its knots and layers. Yet through it all ran an unmistakably tender humanity, revealed in his art, his humour, and the love he carried for others. He met the world with a bright, infectious enthusiasm — a spark that made life feel lighter. Beneath that outward glow, inside of him, light and shadow met in ways not everyone could perceive. It was this beautiful mix of opposites, held so naturally within him, that made him unmistakably and uniquely Claude.
At Royal Ottawa Place, where he was affectionately known as “Cloud”, Claude found not just care but community. He treasured the friendships he made there, each one a steady light in his final years. Amy extends her heartfelt gratitude to his “Earth Angels” at Royal Ottawa Place, whose love, gentleness, and extraordinary devotion gave him a safe and cherished place to land.
For those who wish to honour Claude’s memory, the family welcomes donations to Royal Ottawa Place ‹ETransfer@theroyal.ca (Password: Royal, message: “ROP Donation for Claude”) / Cheque payable to Royal Ottawa Place, memo “ROP Donation for Claude,” mailed to 1141 Carling Avenue, Ottawa›
Though he has gone from sight, Claude’s essence remains carved into the hearts and memories of those who loved him. His life will be celebrated in Iroquois Falls later this year, when he returns home to the beloved North that shaped his spirit.
