Carol LaPointe

July 23, 1943 — January 4, 2023

On January 4, 2023, Carol Ann Reaburn LaPointe passed away peacefully in her residence, the Craiglee Nursing Home in Scarborough after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. She was 79.

Carol was born on July 23, 1943, in St. Catherine’s, Ontario to Tina Spoelstra and Harry Reaburn. She lived the majority of her life in the Toronto region, working most of her career at The Globe and Mail as Assistant to the Editor before taking early retirement.

Carol was a long-time member of the Birch Cliff community in Scarborough and until her health condition made it possible, was an original and active member of the Rosetta McClean Gardens Hawk-watch which was her favourite place on earth. Her true passion in life was bird watching. She spent every waking minute enjoying every type of bird she could get her eyes on with close friends which included doing falconry and traveling to various hawk-watches within southern Ontario. At one point, she owned upwards of 5 different kinds of binoculars.

She was an avid reader and loved listening to music every waking minute. Her favourite artists included Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Crossby, Stills , Nash & Young and The Beatles, among many others.

Carol had the biggest heart, was generous to a fault, and was a strong independent woman. Her friends describe her as a lovely lady, always friendly and cheerful, and she was one of the bright lights at Rosetta.

She was an amazing conversationalist, whether you knew her or not. She was the super friendly person who literally said “hello” to every person she walked by. She had the gift of gab which she was able to joke about herself regularly.

Though Carol’s health failed in recent years, she fought every roadblock put in her path, and lived every day to the fullest. When she could no longer walk, she danced in her chair, when she could no longer speak, she hummed her favourite songs. This lovely lady was a “tough cookie”.

Carol is survived by her sons, Riel and D’Arcy, daughters-in-law Carol and Yuko, grandchildren Ellie and Kyle, and her lifelong closest friends Reet, Ann, Sandra, Helen & Fred.

She is finally at peace and able to fly like an eagle in the heavens. Private funeral services will be held.
