Beryl (Nicholls) Deyasi

Passed away on Thursday, September 7, 2023 in Gatineau, Quebec in her 85th year.  Beloved wife of Subodh Kumar (Sam) for 55 years.  Dear mother of Marco (Melinda) and Monica (Stéphane).  She will be missed by her younger sister Barbara (Bill) and nieces, great-nephews and a great-niece.  Predeceased by her parents John and Ethel (née Earnshaw) Nicholls, her sister Margaret and brother Peter all of Sheffield, England. 

Beryl greatly enjoyed gardening, travelling, reading and watching movies and TV – especially British shows, crime, police and mystery dramas.   She was adventurous, courageous and not afraid to go after what she wanted regardless of the possible outcome.  She accepted all people for any and all reasons – a woman ahead of her time.  She cared greatly for the environment and was recycling before official programs were in place. She enjoyed helping at her children’s elementary school, St. Thomas and helping new students learn to read, especially those learning English as a second language.    She is known for sharing her “British-isms” with others, whether it be expressions, pronunciation of words or pop culture.

Beryl spent many happy years (1973-2002) in the Ottawa area where they raised their children and then retired in Nanaimo, BC in 2002.  They moved back to Gatineau, QC in August 2022 to be closer to their daughter.

Beryl’s family wishes to extend their gratitude to the doctors, nurses and support workers of the Hull Hospital, especially those in the Palliative Care Unit including Dr. Laafou, Dr. Gibily, Patrick, Suzy, Amin, Shani, Josée and Guylaine (Mme. Butterfly).

A Memorial Gathering will be held at the Nepean Sailing Club (Harbourview Hall) on Friday, October 20, 2023 from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. with a service at 12 noon.   Formal attire is not needed, but business casual is requested.
