It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Barry Flahey on January 16, 2026, at the May Court Hospice in Ottawa. Born in Brighton, England he spent 10 years in the RAF and then he held various illustrative jobs before he moved to Canada in 1970.
In his working life he was an illustrator in aviation, entomology and botanicals. He was a lifelong enthusiast of the natural world, a devoted friend to all creatures and a talented artist whose paintings, drawings and photography reflected the beauty of nature around him.
His garden was a vibrant sanctuary for many birds and wildlife and he experienced some wonderful adventures in Algonquin Park and the Arctic. He had an amazing sense of humour which was also shown in his excellent insect drawings.
Barry is predeceased by his beloved spouse and life partner of over 30 years, Rachelle Mantha.
Animals held a special place in Barry’s heart, especially his beloved dogs.
Barry will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
A private celebration of life will be held at a later date. In honor of Barry, his family suggests contributions to The Friends of Algonquin Park (www.algonquinpark.on.ca) that was close to his heart.
