.Barbara "Jane" Cleary, a remarkable individual whose life was marked by strength, compassion, and unwavering dedication to her family and friends, passed away on May 11, 2025, at Cornwall Hospice. Born on September 13, 1952, in Hamilton, Ontario, Jane's journey through life was characterized by her resilience and her role as a caregiver, often putting the needs of others before her own.
Jane's professional life included a fruitful career as a switchboard operator and dispatcher, but her impact extended far beyond her work. She graduated from Glengarry District High School and furthered her education at St. Lawrence College as a Teacher's Assistant, where she excelled and won many awards, reflecting her commitment to personal growth and development.
Throughout her life, Jane was an incredibly strong person who bravely fought rheumatoid arthritis from a young age and later, cancer. Despite her challenges, she maintained a spirit of caring that never wavered. This nurturing personality extended to her family, where she played a pivotal role in raising her granddaughter, Ava Cleary, who affectionately regarded her as a bonus parent.
Jane’s interests were as diverse as they were engaging. She enjoyed participating in a barbershop choir, drawing, baking, and spending weekends camping and fishing. Time spent with her loved ones, whether in person or through her tablet, brought great joy to her life. She found happiness in playing board games and video games, creating bonds and memories that will be cherished by her family and friends.
She leaves behind her loving daughters, Colleen Cleary and Sylvie Hamelin, along with her cherished granddaughter, Ava. Jane is also survived by her siblings, nieces, nephews, and many dear friends, all of whom were touched by her kindness and warmth.
Jane is reunited in spirit with her beloved husband, Edward Cleary, who preceded her in death.
Her legacy of strength, love, and compassion will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know her. Jane will be deeply missed but fondly remembered for the light she brought into the lives of so many.
Cremation has taken place and there will be a gathering in Hamilton, time and date to be determined.
