Andrzej Derkowski was born on October 14, 1931 in Poznań, Poland.
He died on December 23, 2024, at the age of 93, in Toronto, Ontario of congestive heart failure.
He arrived in Canada in 1949. Worked hard to become a Canadian citizen. Went on to educate himself and receive a M.Sc. in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Toronto.
He designed over one hundred residential subdivisions in Ontario, the U.S.A and the Caribbean.
He was an active member in the Polish community. Served as an elected Chairman of a funding committee at the U of T. This was to raise funds for a permanent Chair of Polish History there. For this he was awarded the “Arbor Award” from the U of T and Cross of Merit from the President of Poland.
His interests were in history and world events. He had many concerns and opinions on these matters. A number of his “letters to the editor” about these opinions were published in the Globe and Mail.
At the age of 85 he wrote and published his memoir “Passage Through Turbulent Times”. His 10 year journey leaving Poland with his father, landing in Canada alone and building a life here.
He enjoyed sailing and feeding chipmunks at his cabin in the woods.
He died two days after his second late wife, Gillian Doherty.
He leaves three children by his first marriage to the late Helen nee Banel: Adele, Edward and Jan. Six grandchildren: Eric, Casey, Tamara, Zachary, Jesse and Kristel. One great grandchild: Everly Rose
