Andrew Mearns

1933 — 2025

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father, Andy Mearns, on Monday, September 1, 2025 at North York General Hospital.

Dad will be deeply missed and forever loved by his four children, Kim (predeceased Jim), Stephen (Joanne), Andrena (Ted), Karen (Rod). A proud Granda/Grandpa to Delena (Mark), Mark, Anthoni, Andrew (Hope), Stephen (Christine), Danielle, William, Michael, Katie, Emily. A beloved and cherished Great Grandpa to Hailey, Tristyn, Caiden, Dallas, Alexis, Dean, Greysen, Sophie, Nathan and Violet.

Andy was born in Belfast N. Ireland on May 12, 1933 to Ethel and Robert Mearns. In July 1965 Andy decided to immigrate to Canada to build a new life for his family. He carried with him the love for football (soccer), having played semi-professionally in Ireland. He later became an avid supporter of Manchester United. He loved all kinds of sports, from college football to hockey, baseball, golf and tennis.

Dad was also proud of his Scottish heritage and was a member of the Sons of Scotland. He was also proud of his involvement in building the Canadian arm for the space shuttle - an achievement that gave him immense pride.

Those who knew Andy will remember his great sense of humour, his wit, and his tremendous knowledge of soccer and hockey stats, his unique Irish sayings, and his deep devotion to his family. Whether cheering on a football match, sharing stories of growing up in Belfast, or celebrating family milestones, Dad’s heart was always filled with the people he loved.

At 92 years old, Dad lived a full life, filled with laughter, resilience and legacy. He will always be remembered with the deepest of love, pride and gratitude. God Bless you Dad.

A private family service and a celebration of life will be held on Saturday September 6th 2025.
