It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Alec Tedder on June 13, 2025, in Ottawa. Alec was born on June 7, 1964, in North Vancouver, where he grew up and got into all kinds of high-spirited mischief in the 70s and 80s with his dear friends. After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts from Simon Fraser University, Alec moved to Taiwan to teach English. He told great stories about working with children there and the travel and fun he got up to with his international colleagues who became fast friends. Alec moved to Ottawa to study International Relations at NPSIA at Carleton University. It was there that he met Rena Ramkay, his spouse. Alec settled in Ottawa in 1997, building a life full of love, travel, sport and adventure with Rena. Their shared life was enriched by their dogs, Fresca, Koko, and Pippa. Alec played team sports his whole life and notably took up curling with Rena a few years ago, which he enjoyed immensely.
Alec had a successful career in the Government of Canada. He began working with Consulting and Audit Canada before moving to Health Canada, where Alec last settled in at the Controlled Substances and Cannabis Branch. He had many dear colleagues.
In 2005, Alec was diagnosed and treated for melanoma. After 20 years with no sign of the cancer, at the end of May 2025 it returned with a ferocity that rapidly took Alec’s life. Alec is survived by his spouse Rena, his sister Cami, mother Margo, wonderful nieces, nephews, cousins, a loving stepfamily, and a long list of friends who all loved him and who he loved dearly.
Alec is mourned by many, but we also celebrate his love of life, his generosity of spirit that accepted everyone without judgment, his thoughtful kindness, his piercing intelligence, his wonderful storytelling and his mischievous sense of humor. He was a remarkable man who was unaware of how special he was. A celebration of life will be held in both Ottawa and North Vancouver, the dates and times which will be announced in future at https://www.basicfunerals.ca/obituaries where you can also sign his guestbook.
Alec supported Plan International Canada and Ottawa Humane Society, should you wish to donate to in his name.
