Albert (Al) Edmund Millson

March 25, 1936 — July 13, 2025

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Albert (Al) Edmund Millson, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, after a courageous battle with dementia. Al passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones, at the age of 89 on July 13, 2025, in Ottawa.

Born to Norman and Olive Millson in London, Ontario, Al was a true original. A man with an inventive mind, an endless sweet tooth, and a deep love for his family. He had an unbreakable spirit and never met a problem he couldn’t solve with some duct tape, a wire and sheer intellect. He was happiest when tinkering in the garage, spending time at the farm, porch chats with his daughter, cheering on his sons or grandson at the next hockey tournament, or sitting for a midnight snack at the kitchen table with a tub of ice cream. He loved the satisfaction of doing it yourself, adored animals, and could never say no to an ice-cold Coke; the good stuff, not that fake sugar. Those who knew Al will also fondly remember his endearing gruffness, but underneath his introverted nature was a kind and generous soul, a desire to contribute, and deep care for those around him. Whether it was 6am hockey practices, personal roadside assistance in the middle of a blizzard, or helping problem-solve the latest mechanical issue, he was always there for his family, regardless of the circumstances.

Al dedicated much of his career to teaching as a chemistry professor at Algonquin College, where he inspired countless students with his passion for science and his creative, hands-on lessons that made chemistry come alive.

In his retirement, he started his new role as caregiver, personal coach, chauffeur, videographer, and number one fan for his grandson, Justin. Not a game was missed, and only the best equipment was good enough for his all-star.

Al was the devoted husband of Linda for 57 years, and proud father of Darryl (Monique), Karoline - with whom he shared a special bond and was her best friend, Brad (Jenny), and the late Rory. He was a loving grandfather to Justin, Tristan, Ryan, Abby and the late Jessica.

A memorial Mass to celebrate Al’s life will be held on Saturday, July 26, at 11:00 am at Annunciation of the Lord Catholic Church, 2414 Ogilvie Road, Gloucester, Ontario. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to the Brain Canada Foundation or Hockey Canada Assist Fund in Al’s memory.

He will be remembered for his big heart, his mischievous grin, and his boundless curiosity about how the world works. Al’s love and laughter live on in all who knew him.

“We are forever grateful for the love and memories shared with Dad. His spirit will always be with us.” — The Millson Family
