Passed away peacefully at home in Mississauga, Ontario, on September 4th, 2025 at the age of 89. Loving husband of Jeanette (Murison). Amazing father of Andrew, Aileen and Alison. Fun loving Grandpa of Emma, Nate, Roswell, Newton, Connor and Ewan. Brother of Ian, brother-in-law of Gladys Williams and uncle of Alastair and Anna.
Alan was born in 1936 in the Oatlands area of Glasgow, Scotland to Matthew and Hilda Gray. From an early age, he had an avid and slightly dangerous interest in chemistry. After managing successfully not to blow up the tenement where he lived, he started work in a laboratory at the age of 16 and studied at night for his BSc in Applied Chemistry.
At a dance in Glasgow in 1961, he met a young physiotherapy student from Aberdeen named Jeanette and there was, appropriately, wonderful chemistry between them. They married in 1965 and lived in Paisley until 1976 when they emigrated to Mississauga. He worked the rest of his career for Dominion Colour Corporation, a pigment manufacturer in Ajax, working his way up to a Vice President position.
Alan was an avid sportsman, enjoying rowing (Scottish Amateur Rowing Champion 1958) mountain climbing, running (he completed a marathon at age 50) golfing and pickleball, as well as being an enthusiastic fan of the Toronto Blue Jays.
Alan and Jeanette were both enthusiastic members of the Ontario Raquet Club, where they spent a great deal of time exercising, socializing with their numerous friends, and eating more than a few muffins. He also loved to explore new places. He and Jeanette spent a joyful and active retirement travelling to more than 50 countries. He documented these extensively in much-loved video compilations (Graybeard Productions) that were required watching by his entire family.
His family will especially miss Alan’s gregarious nature, sense of mischief, love of language and puns and off-key, but enthusiastic, singing.
There will be a celebration of life at the Ontario Racquet Club in Mississauga on September 28th from 4-6 pm. Please RSVP at https://alangray.rsvpify.com
